Have you ever wondered what kind of person becomes a luthier? Most Herald readers know that a luthier is one who makes and/or repairs stringed instruments, from lutes (the derivative word from the French) to violins and guitars and banjos. A luthier is someone who can sit at a workbench for uninterrupted hours on end, gently, painstakingly shaving and sanding wood to fit this or scraping old wood to glue that, mostly by hand in the same way that luthiers have worked for centuries. Here the concept of a “bigger hammer” does not belong.
