In the decade
since their introduction to traditional music at the Augusta
Heritage Center, Ann and Phil Case have gone from being
almost innocent of old-time music to standing among its
most skilled crafters. When Ann and Phil work out their
arrangements, the goal is not to exactly recreate earlier
performances. “I think how the song feels when you
hear it is what we want to recreate,” says Phil.
"If we attempt to sound exactly like the Blue Sky
Boys or the Carter Family—well, there already were
Blue Sky Boys and the Carter Family. And I recommend those
recordings to anyone; there are plenty of them available.
They don’t need us being just clones or copycats.
But, if people hear us and like the sound…then they
will become interested in where the songs came from..." |
