Square dance caller and dulcimer maker Charlie Whitaker died on October 17, 2009, at Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. A student of Alice Lloyd, Whitaker was the caller at the Carcassonne Square Dance for forty years, and taught square dance and dulcimer construction at the college. Whitaker was a Korean War veteran, a participant at several Kentucky Folklife Festivals, and a demonstrator at the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
