McFarland has several new books related to old-time music among their forthcoming 2022 releases. Naomi “Omie” Wise: Her Life, Death, and Legend, by Hal Pugh and Eleanor Minnock-Pugh, tells the story of the real Omie Wise, whose early 19th-century murder inspired the well-known ballad. Also forthcoming is Lew Stern’s Tommy Malboeuf: The Life of a Carolina Fiddler, a biography of the bluegrass fiddler from the North Carolina Piedmont. Among McFarland’s recent releases are What Earl Scruggs Heard: String Music Along the North Carolina – South Carolina Border, by Bob Carlin, about the traditional music and musicians that influenced Scruggs; and Laura Dean’s Music in the Westward Expansion: Songs of Heart and Place on the American Frontier, about the music of the people whose traditions met in the frontier-era American West.
